Test Strategy

Test Strategy

For successful delivery of a project, it’s essential that testing is prepared for correctly. And to do this, a clear vision of how testing will fit alongside project delivery is required.

This is delivered by creating a test strategy, which can take many forms. Traditionally it can be a document, however more recent agile projects have favoured more lightweight documentation versions. This can include a test strategy roadmap or matrix, which also have the advantage of creating an easier to digest ‘mental model’ of test progress and milestones.

Key elements of a test strategy include:

  • Test estimation approach

  • Test tools

  • Test environments

  • Approach to functional and non-functional testing

  • Approach to manual and automated testing

  • Test progress reporting

  • Entry and exit criteria

It’s important that the test strategy is clear, well communicated and understood by the key teams, stakeholders and resources on the project. From the outset, it’s crucial to invest in your test strategy and vision – this will assist with providing both clarity and quality throughout the project delivery.
