Why Microsoft and IBM are leading with their technology and the technologies that DeeperThanBlue cover
IBM
IBM Planning Analytics has been identified as a Leader in the IDC MarketScape for Enterprise Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting Applications 2026. Highlights noted by MarketScape included:
- The platform offers a choice between the web-based Planning Analytics Workspace and Excel add-in environments, addressing diverse user preferences and workflows.
- The platform offers generative AI features in production, including chart insights, forecast insights, outlier analysis, and natural language summarization. These capabilities are integrated into the planning workflow, enabling users to extract actionable insights without extensive data science expertise.
- The platform tracks user actions systemwide and allows users to roll back to any historical point, allowing for auditability and supporting compliance requirements.
IBM Cognos also helps to visualise and report on your data.
Microsoft
Microsoft Power BI provides one of the most comprehensive and cost‑effective dashboard, visualisation, and reporting solutions available today. Coupled with Power Automate and Microsoft Fabric, it becomes a powerful end‑to‑end data and workflow platform.
Power BI consumes and models data from Fabric’s unified data layers—such as Data Lake, Data Warehouse, and Real‑Time Analytics—ensuring that insights are always based on consistent, well‑governed information. Power Automate then extends these insights into action by triggering workflows from Power BI events or data conditions, enabling automated alerts, approval flows, data refreshes, and downstream business processes.
Together, Power BI, Power Automate, and Fabric create a seamless environment where data can be ingested, transformed, visualised, and acted upon, supporting organisations in driving more intelligent, timely, and automated decision‑making.

In Retail: We implemented Planning Analytics for Buying Budgets, Breaking down £1.5Bn spend into Product Classes, Brand Types, Genders, Seasonalities and by Week, allowing integrated planning to control buying from a top down perspective across separate business units The next step was to implement Stores and Web Budgeting covering over 1000 retail stores, and over 150 websites split into countries, this will allow a holistic view of geographic coverage and performance versus budgets with rolling forecasts.
In Aggregates & Waste Management: We developed cross‑functional Microsoft Power BI dashboards for Patersons, integrating data from multiple business units spanning quarrying, waste management, plant hire, and engineering. This unified reporting layer allowed senior leaders to analyse sales performance, profitability, top customers, product ranges, and seasonal trends in real time, replacing spreadsheet‑driven reporting with automated, live insights. By modelling and consolidating data from several disparate systems, we enabled both group‑level oversight and detailed subsidiary‑level drill‑downs, significantly improving decision‑making and providing a more dynamic, ERP‑aligned view of their operations.
In Sports Apparel & eCommerce: Working with Kitlocker, we unified analytics, reporting, and ecommerce operations to reveal a rich, actionable data source across their digital channels. By integrating ecommerce performance metrics with broader business reporting, we enabled the team to gain deeper insight into customer behaviour, merchandising performance, and operational efficiency. This joined‑up analytical approach supported smarter decision‑making, improving both online customer experience and internal performance management through consolidated, data‑driven reporting.
In Social Care & Compliance Reporting: We partnered with The Richmond Fellowship Scotland to modernise their KPI, certification, and training compliance reporting by transitioning their Learning and Development function from spreadsheet‑based outputs to Microsoft Power BI. Through mentoring, data modelling guidance, and collaborative review sessions, we helped their team resolve reporting challenges, streamline the production of dashboards, and gain self‑service capability. This shift enabled faster, more accurate compliance oversight across an organisation supporting 2,500+ people, enhancing visibility of key metrics and reducing reliance on manual data handling.
